WINNING THE
CHAMPIONSHIP IS VITAL, NOT FIRST GAME, SAYS MI
SKIPPER ROHIT AFTER LOSS AGAINST RCB

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma is stable by the loss against
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) within the opening match of Indian Premier
League (IPL) 2021 as he feels that winning the tournament is of utmost
importance and not the primary game.
Harshal Patel delivered a shocking bowling performance before AB
de Villiers' masterclass helped RCB defeat Mumbai Indians by two wickets in
Chennai at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday.
Harshal Patel had picked five wickets to limit Mumbai Indians to 159 runs within the allotted 20 overs and Rohit admitted that his side
was 20 runs in need of the par score.
"Winning the championship is important, I guess, not the
first game. Great fight, we didn't let it go easily. Although the score wasn't
something we were happy with. We were 20 short," Rohit told hosts'
broadcasters Star Sports after the match.
"We made some mistakes, those are bound to happen. We need to
move on. [Jansen] is definitely a talent we've identified. When you look at the
situation with four overs left they had AB and Christian, that's why we went
with Bumrah and Boult to try and get them out," he added.
"Definitely not an easy pitch to bat on, odd ball was
gripping. That's something we could think of in our next few games here. De
Villiers batted really well and got them home," said Rohit.
"We haven't had much time together as a group and it was
totally opposite in Dubai, where we began preparations a month before. But
that's how the IPL has been played over the years, you just got to get in the
game as quickly as possible," he further added.
"It can be difficult for teams that have great home records,
but that is what sport is, you've got to go away and win. We are fortunate that
we're even on the park," Rohit added.
Mumbai Indians will next lock horns with Kolkata Knight Riders
(KKR) on Tuesday (April 13).
AB DE
VILLIERS SCRIPTS LAST-BALL VICTORY FOR ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE
Source: IPLAB de Villiers rolled back the years together with his beautiful yet brutal assault as Royal Challengers Bangalore
pipped defending champions Mumbai Indians by two wickets during a last-ball thriller within the Indian Premier League opener in Chennai on Friday.
De Villiers smashed 48 off 27 balls after RCB were down within the dumps at 106 for five. Harshal Patel capped off his dream day by
scraping one off the ultimate delivery to succeed in the target of 160 in 20 overs.
Haryana's Harshal, endless peripheral presence within the IPL, finally had his night under the lights with 5
for 27, which helped RCB restrict MI to 159 for nine.
MI again lost the primary match as has been the tradition within the IPL but they lost it to de Villiers, who changed
the script during a space of two overs by attacking the 2 MI spinners Rahul Chahar (0/43) and Krunal Pandya
(1/25). His attack prompted Rohit Sharma to end his best bowler Jasprit Bumrah's spell (2/26 in 4
overs) before the ultimate over, from which seven runs were required.
RCB were on top of things when Glenn Maxwell (39 off 28 balls) came in and upset
leg-spinner Chahar's line with a reverse-pull boundary. He repeated the shot
off an equivalent bowler for a six and got another maximum off Krunal Pandya
over long-on.
Skipper Virat Kohli (33 off 29 balls), who had embarked on an experienced Marco Jansen in his first over, got a touch caught up because the innings progressed. However, Maxwell's attack meant that
Kohli could take his time.
It was MI's strike bowler Bumrah, who came back
for his second spell at the back-10 and removed the Indian captain with an
angular delivery.
If that wasn't enough, Jansen, the 6 feet 8 inch
youngster banged one short that ended Maxwell's potentially dangerous innings because the 'Big Show' once more promised tons but delivered little.
After Jansen removed Shahbaz Ahmed, de Villiers
announced his arrival with a six and a boundary off Chahar.
HARSHAL
PATEL GOT FIVE WICKET HAUL AGAINST MUMBAI INDIANS AND BECOMES FIRST BOWLER IN
IPL HISTORY.
Source: IPLHarshal Patel produced a death over
masterclass with a five-wicket haul as Mumbai Indians achieved a par score of
159 for nine against Royal Challengers Bangalore within the IPL opener in Chennai on Friday. Harshal picked up
5 for 27 in his four overs and was brilliant at the death as he became the primary player to urge a five-for against Mumbai Indians.
Reserve opener Chris Lynn (49 off 35 balls)
partially made amends for his part during a horrible mix-up that led to skipper Rohit Sharma's
(19 off 15 balls) run-out, by adding 70 runs in seven overs for the second wicket
with Suryakumar Yadav (31 off 23 balls). That stand was the platform that MI
needed to fireside during the back-end. Fresh from his exploits for India, Ishan Kishan blazed his thanks to 28 off 19 balls but Harshal got a couple of wickets within the final over to stop MI from inflicting bigger damage.
On a Chepauk track where an honest score is anything within the region of 150, the entire was certainly par for the course. Kyle Jamieson (1/27 in 4 overs) had a powerful IPL debut together with his disconcerting bounce but the seasoned Yuzvendra Chahal (0/41
in 4 overs) has clearly lost his bearings for a few time now. But Harshal, Chahal's Haryana teammate
made it up with some accurate wicket-to-wicket bowling within the 18th and 20th over. Just ONE escape the last over.
Lynn, who looked shaky during the primary few overs, stepped bent loft Chahal for a six over long-on and another
over wide of long-on off left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed to urge his rhythm back. This was after he called Rohit
for a non-existent single then sent him back, only to seek out the skipper yards in need of his ground.
Suryakumar (31 off 23 balls), at the opposite end, took far away from where he left against England as he clipped Jamieson for a
boundary punched Chahal through covers off the rear foot then back-cut Dan Christian for an additional four.
The pitch that looked slow during the primary four overs went out of the equation as runs came
at a good clip. The 50 partnership for the second wicket
came off 27 balls.
The shot of the innings was Suryakumar's
effortless clip over deep mid-wicket for a six off Jamieson. But the enormous Black Cap got his first IPL wicket when the additional bounce produced by his 6 feet 8-inch frame had the
Indian edging one behind the stumps.
Washington Sundar was brought as late because the 13th over and while Lynn made a press release with a straight boundary, the slowness did get to him with
the ball stopping before he could execute the lofted shot.
Washington took an excellent catch running backwards, preventing Lynn from scoring a half-century before Quinton de Kock comes back to require his place after serving his hard quarantine.
SUPER “V” CONTINUES
TO FIELD WITH PUFFED EYE
Virat Kohli survived a serious injury scare during the season opener of the 14th
edition of the Indian Premier League against Mumbai Indians on Friday. The
skipper was hit by the ball on his face during the Mumbai innings, which also
left his eyes swollen, but the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper's
determination remained intact despite the blow.
The moment occurred within the first delivery of the 19th over, when Kohli tried
to pluck an incoming shot by Krunal Pandya. However, the safe custodian at this point did not hold onto the ball, because it hit his hands then his face, under his right eye, thus explaining the
swelling.
However, the RCB skipper continued to play after
the blow and even let loose a smile, bringing a sigh of relief among his
supporters. Meanwhile, Harshal Patel emerged because the star from RCB dug-out as he went on to finish his maiden fifer within the lucrative T20 league and helped his side restrict
Mumbai for 159/9 after 20 overs.
